The Robot vs the Aztec Mummy is a 1958 Mexican sci-fi horror film directed by Rafael Portillo from a screenplay by Alfredo Salazar.
The movie stars Ramón Gay, Rosa Arenas and Crox Alvarado.
The film is a sequel to The Aztec Mummy and The Curse of the Aztec Mummy, both released earlier that year, and a large portion of the film consists of an extended recap of the first two entries in the series. The three films were all shot in 1957, one after another without a break in the production schedule.
English-language dubbing rights were subsequently acquired by entrepreneur K. Gordon Murray, who distributed the film nationally in 1964, on a programmed double bill with The Vampire’s Coffin (El Ataud del Vampiro), as Young America Productions Inc. Subsequently, he syndicated it to TV, as one of a package of dubbed Mexican horror films which eventually gained a following in the US through their appearance on the USA Cable Network.
Reviews:
“The American dialogue sounds like something I would’ve written in 7th grade, with the worst dubbing east of Toho Studios. Some of the flashback shots are atmospheric, but most of the film is indescribably inept. You keep waiting for something to happen, and when it finally does, it’s a major disappointment.” Cracked Rear Viewer
“The direction is static and dull. There is a failure to invest anything in terms of atmosphere in the scenes with the mummy creeping about and menacing people. The most ridiculous thing about the twenty minutes of original footage that we get though is the robot. This is an absurdly clunky looking tin can where the actor inside awkwardly walks while swaying from side to side…” Moria
“RvAM is just so strange, it’s hard not to become fascinated. The Krupp character is so over-the-top that he’s intriguing to watch. The final battle scene in the last five minutes is so odd (more like a grade-school pushing match with sparks and smoke) that it’s worth the wait.” Classic Sci-Fi Movies
