Sony Music Publishing and its songwriters and composers were recognized for their accomplishments across pop music at BMI’s 72nd Annual Pop Awards in Los Angeles this week.
Sony Music Publishing was named BMI’s Pop Publisher of the Year for the seventh consecutive year with 34 of the past year’s most performed pop songs in the US including SZA’s Kill Bill, co-written by Rob Bisel, Morgan Wallen’s Last Night, co-written by Charlie Handsome and more.
Additionally, Miley Cyrus’ Flowers was named Song of the Year.
Sony Music Publishing songwriter honorees include 070 Shake, Akil “Fresh” King, Alonzo Miller, Anne-Marie, Beach Noise, Caroline Ailin, Charlie Handsome, Clinton Sparks, Coi Leray, Dan Darmawan, Dylan Wiggins, and Ed Sheeran.
They also included Enya, INK, Johnny McDaid, Kamille, Keanu Torres, Lady Gaga, Latto, Lil Nas X, Mario Winans, Miley Cyrus, Mike Sabath, Nicky Ryan, P!nk, PinkPantheress, Rob Bisel, Roma Ryan, Ruth B, Sam Dew, Sarah Aarons, Sarcastic Sounds, Sounwave, Tamar Kaprelian, Tate McRae and Tom Barnes.
Elsewhere at the event, recording artist and songwriter benny blanco was honored with the BMI President’s Award.
In addition, BMI’s Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year, and BMI’s top 50 most-performed pop songs in the US of the previous year were also announced.
The private event was hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and Vice President, Worldwide Creative, Barbara Cane.
BMI’s Pop Songwriter of the Year went to Taylor Swift for 10 of the previous year’s most-performed songs, including Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Cruel Summer, Karma, Lavender Haze, Maroon, Midnight Rain, Snow on the Beach, Vigilante Shit, and You’re on Your Own, Kid.
Swift has received a total of 65 BMI Awards over her career and was honored with the BMI President Award in 2009, the BMI Taylor Swift Award in 2016.
BMI also celebrated 34 first-time Pop Award winners, including Sabrina Carpenter (Nonsense), Ice Spice (“Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2), Jelly Roll and Rob Ragosta (Need A Favor), Kamille (I’m Good (Blue)), Stephen Sanchez (Until I Found You), and more.
