MOVIES and MANIA rating:
Possession: Kerasukan is a 2024 horror film about a soldier who returns from duty to discover his wife wants a divorce. It draws inspiration from Andrzej Zulawski’s divisive 1981 film Possession. The title translates into English as “Possession: Possessed”.
The movie was directed by Razka Robby Ertanto from a screenplay by Lele Laila (Wanita Ahli Neraka; Kemah Terlarang: Kesurupan Massal; Possession: Kerasukan; Pemandi Jenazah; Siska Neraka; Sijjin; Ivanna; Asih 2; KKN Di Desa Penari; Danur 3: Sunyaruri; Asih; Danur 2: Maddah; Danur: I Can See Ghosts) based on a 1981 film written by Andrzej Zulawski.
Plot:
Faris (Darius Sinathrya), who has just returned from months of military service, is immediately greeted by a request for divorce from his wife, Ratna. Suspecting that another man was behind Ratna’s strange behaviour, Faris wanted to investigate various possibilities, including extramarital affairs. But, what happened might be beyond what he thought, leading to something more sinister than he expected…
Reviews:
“The problem […] appears when the story moves almost completely towards the supernatural, with Ertanto losing his sense of measure and control of his narrative, to a point at least. That the low budget of the film does not help in the SFX department makes this sense even worse […] Possession: Kerasukan emerges as a mixed bag, which does lean towards the better side, though, particularly due to its visuals, stylized approach and the sensualism it emits.” Asian Movie Pulse
“The only downer is that this descends into jump scares and possession scenes at the end, forgetting that while the title of the movie does reference that element of the supernatural, it’s truly about the emotional gulf that happens when love goes away. I don’t regret the time I spent watching this, but it won’t replace the film I already own.” B&S About Movies
” …visually enticing; however, it doesn’t have that standout quality. The supernatural is not convincing, and while the idea is impactful, it feels forced visually. At times, things unfold too conveniently, and there are scenes that are not executed well, but the message at the core of the film is well conveyed.” DMT
” …Possession: Kerasukan is not for everyone. It’s a slow, unsettling experience that demands patience and an appreciation for the weird and unexplainable. For fans of psychological horror and those familiar with the original, it offers a fresh, chilling reinterpretation that honors its roots while carving out its own distinct identity. It’s a challenging, eerie ride…” 6/10 Midgard Times
“Ertanto […] mines themes of lust, powers of the sexes, and more, combining a supernatural horror approach — the Indonesian ghost known as a pocong ties in with the film’s title — with a stylish, Lynchian neo-noir feel, as well. The film looks gorgeous, with Director of Photography Yunus Pasolang capturing the exciting results of Frans Paat’s art direction and the film’s elegant color palette and bizarreness beautifully. ” ★★★½ The Scariest Things
