After seemingly endless speculation that the Los Angeles Lakers would hire former player and current ESPN analyst JJ Redick as their next head coach, the storied franchise has pivoted to targeting UConn’s Dan Hurley as Darvin Ham’s successor.
Reportedly, the Lakers have offered Hurley a massive contract worth over $100 million to convince him to leave the UConn Huskies in favor of the NBA, with a decision expected to be made over the weekend.
In the meantime, it seems that everyone is chiming in on whether this would be a good move for the Lakers and if it would be a wise move for Hurley, considering he’ll be leaving a good situation with the Huskies and would be taking a job that only a few have been successful at throughout the franchise’s history.
Ironically enough, former Lakers guard JR Smith, who won a title with the team in 2020 alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, took to Twitter to advise Hurley to stay away from the iconic NBA franchise, via Ball Don’t Lie.

There’s no doubt that Hurley will be taking a tremendous risk in taking a highly demanding job that may not have the players to compete for a title right out of the gate.
The Western Conference has only gotten better over the past year, while the Lakers have only gotten older, with James turning 40 in December and Davis having just turned 31 in March.
The odds will definitely not be in Hurley’s favor if he chooses to take the job, but he could be up for the challenge, especially if he becomes one of the highest-paid coaches in the league.
