Stunning news hit the NFL community on Monday when New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick asked to be traded.
This request came just over four months after the Philadelphia Eagles traded Reddick to the Jets for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2026 that would become a second-rounder if Reddick plays in at least 67.5 percent of his team’s snaps and has at least 10 sacks.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz said that this trade request has to do with his contract situation, as he has been looking for an extension dating back to before March’s trade and the Jets haven’t offered one.

Reddick, as Schultz pointed out, has one year left on his current deal, and for some reason, the Jets went through with this trade even though they knew his contract situation was unresolved at the time.
He is one of the NFL’s better pass rushers, and he has posted double-digit sacks in each of the last four years while being named to the Pro Bowl in both of the last two years.
Even if Reddick rescinds this trade request, the Jets are in a situation where they may lack enough pass rushing to have an elite defense.
They let emerging defensive end Bryce Huff leave in free agency, and their second-leading pass rusher in 2023 was linebacker Jermaine Johnson II, who had 7.5 sacks.
Since quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 40 years of age and coming off a torn Achilles, New York will have to win with defense if they are to go far in the playoffs this year.
