LAS VEGAS’ OWN MIKI SUDO IS STILL THE TOP DOG

4 TIME DEFENDING WOMEN’S HOT DOG EATING CHAMP PUTS AWAY UNPRECEDENTED FIFTH CONSECUTIVE MUSTARD BELT WITH RELISH

Greetings sports fans and welcome to another, albeit somewhat overdue, edition of Vegas Valley Sports Beat. I’ve been under the weather, and bust trying to mediate between the extreme left and the extreme right by dint of being unfortunate enough to be caught in the middle. So now let us turn our attention back to the wonderful world of sports.

In the halls of government, Donald Trump might be the lead dog, and Maxine Waters might be a mad dog,  in the world of women’s competitive eating, Las Vegas’s own Miki Sudo is still the top dog and undisputed heavyweight champion of the hot dog world.

Wednesday,  Miki Sudo, four-time reigning Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, gobbled up an amazing fifth consecutive Mustard Belt by wolfing down 37 frankfurters and buns amid scorching temperatures and stifling humidity.

While this was 4 dogs short of her personal record of 41 which she recorded last year, Miki was pleased with her performance just the same. As well she has every right to be.

Following the impressive defense of her title, the 32-year-old champion told reporters in Atlantic City, “I really wasn’t looking to beat my personal best or even a record. A win is a win. Today everybody’s numbers were a little bit lower, maybe because of the heat, I don’t know what it was. When I saw that I had a considerable lead, at one point by eight hot dogs, I said, it’s fine, I’m done.”

Michelle Lesco, a contestant from Tucson, Arizona, took second place, by scarfing down 28 hot dogs, while Juliet Lee, of Maryland, came in third by consuming a total of 25 hot dogs, and buns.

All of the contestants at the famous 4th of July contest, men and women alike, had to compete with the heat and the humidity which soared into the high 90’s by the time the event got underway in the afternoon.

Many of them had been standing in line for a seat at the table since 7am Wednesday morning.

About midpoint into the contest, Michelle Lesco poured a full bottle of water over her own head, while Miki Sudo scarfed down hot dogs two by two. Her face beet red and drenched with sweat. “It was definitely warm today,” she said later.

Miki was already setting the pace by the four-minute mark when she had eaten 23 dogs compared to Lesco and Lee, who were then at 19 apiece. For the win, Miki took home her 5th straight pink Nathan’s championship belt, a winner’s purse of $10,000, a great big old honking trophy, and 37 free Nathan’s hot dogs.

On the men’s side of the wienie cart reigning champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut won his 11th Nathan’s title Wednesday afternoon when he devoured 74 hot dogs and buns beating last years record of 72.

                   CONGRATULATIONS CHAMP!
