REBELS GOLF FIFTH AFTER SECOND ROUND IN SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO (UNLVRebels.com) – The No. 23 UNLV men’s golf team shot a second-round 5-under-par 279 Friday and are in fifth place at The Goodwin, which is being played at TPC Harding Park (par 71, 7,143 yards).

No. 9 Oklahoma shot a tournament-low 15-under 269 during the second round and lead the tournament by five shots at 20-under 548. California shot 13-under Friday and is in second with a 36-hole total of 15-under 553. The Rebels are at 7-under 561 heading into the final round.

Individually, Oregon’s Norman Xiong matched his first-round score with another 6-under 65 during the second round and leads the field by four shots at 12-under. Stanford’s Jeffrey Swegle is second at 8-under.

UNLV junior Harry Hall and freshman Garrick Higgo are both tied for 13th at 2-under to lead all Rebel players.

STAT OF THE DAY: UNLV is one of just six teams that are under par for the tournament.

REBEL OF THE DAY: Freshman Jack Trent was the low UNLV player on Friday as he shot 4-under 67. He tallied five birdies before he bogeyed 18, moving up from a tie for 75th to a tie for 18th.

REBEL NOTES:
• The tournament features seven teams ranked in the nation’s top 30.
• This is UNLV’s fifth event of the spring. In their first four events of 2018, the Rebels have finished tied for second, first, fourth and first.
• Last season, UNLV won the Mountain West Championship for the second straight year, captured an NCAA Regional title and advanced to the ‘Elite Eight’ at the NCAA Championship.
• Ban and Hall are both 2017 All-Mountain West Team honorees, and Ban earned honorable mention All-America honors. In addition, Ban was named an All-America Scholar.
• Ban (U.S.) and Hall (international) will both compete in this year’s Arnold Palmer Cup.
• Ban, ranked as the No. 9 individual in the country by Golfstat, is on the watch lists for the Hogan and Haskins Awards, which go to the nation’s top collegiate golfer.
• UNLV has an active NCAA record of 29 consecutive regional appearances.
• This season marks the 31st at UNLV for Hall of Fame head coach Dwaine Knight.
